CDB seminar

I’m hosting Dr Ryohichi Sugimura’s seminar with Dr Matsuzaki on August 21. Sugimura-san graduated medical school of Osaka university, then entered a PhD program at Stowers Institute in Kansas. He obtained his PhD by working on hematopoietic stem cells at Linheng Li’s lab. Now he’s a postdoc at George Daley’s lab of Harvard University. He’ll talk about how to make hematopoietic stem cells from hPSCs. Attendance from outside CDB is more than welcome!

というわけで、8/21に、松崎先生といっしょに、すぎりお君こと杉村竜一博士のセミナーを主催します。杉村さんは、阪大医学部を出たあと 、カンザスのStowers InstituteのPhDプログラムに入って、Linheng Liのラボで学位をとり、現在は、HarvardのGeorge Daleyのラボでポスドクをしています。当日は、 ヒト多能性幹細胞から造血幹細胞を造ることに話してくれるそうです。CDB外からも参加できるので、興味のある人は、ぜひぜひ参加してください！

Setup in progress

Kani-san visited us. I saw him for the first time after meeting him at a zebrafish conference in Madison. When I was working at the Minami lab of Kobe university, Kani-san was a senior scientist. It was great to catch up with him.

Finally our nameplates were installed in the building. Now people can come to our lab anytime without being lost. Setup of the fly room is also done! We can really start doing fly pushing in the lab.

南研時代の先輩の可児さんが、ラボを訪問してくれた。めちゃくちゃ久々に会ったのだけれど、色々グッドニュースを聞いた。

ラボの表札が、ようやくCDB内にインストールされたようだ。これで、一応、訪問者は、迷わずに、僕らのラボに来れるはず。そして、ついに、フライルームのセットアップが完了（といっても、顕微鏡入れて、CO2の配管工事をしただけだけれど）。これで、フライプッシングをラボでできるようになった。でも、その前に、USから持ち帰ったハエの卵洗いを、完了しないと。。。

Farewell party

A farewell party was held for Dr Okamoto at the Nishimura lab. So many people, including students, postdocs, PIs and administrative people, participated in the event. The atmosphere was great, and I was impressed by the friendly community of this institute.

西村研の岡本さんの大送別会が、CDBのロビーで開かれた。岡本さんは、今月末に、カリフォルニアへと羽ばたく。彼と出会ったのは、ちょうど１年半前のCDBでのミーティングだった。それ以来、ちょくちょく会う機会があって、色々飲み会を企画してくれたり、お世話になった。送別会では、岡本さんの人徳（？）のなせるわざなんだけれど、めちゃくちゃたくさん人が集まって、異常な盛り上がりを見せていた。たぶん知らない人が見たら、どこのセンター長の送別会だと思うくらいの感じだった。学生、ポスドク、PIs、事務方がここまで一体感をもてる研究所はそうそうない気がする。

First visitor

Tanaka-san visited us as a first visitor to our lab. He influenced me a lot in a positive way, when I was a medical student and was not sure if I could pursue a career as a scientist. It was great to catch up with him.

学会で神戸に来ている田中さんが、ラボ初ヴィジターとして、訪問してくれた。僕が学部生の頃、彼には、人生の先駆者として、色々影響された。久々にお話しできて、嬉しかった。

Wing discs = 翅原基

I've been writing a grant proposal for the first time in Japanese. I found it extremely difficult or almost impossible. It seems like I need to re-learn "proper" Japanese for writing scientific sentences... But, several colleagues and friends helped me improve my Japanese writing for the proposal. I'm super thankful for the super awesome people!

生まれて初めてニホンゴでサインエンスのグラントプロポーザルを書いているのだけれど、ニホンゴでサイエンスについて書くのがこんなに難しいものだったとは。。。全く正しいニホンゴが使えない。単語もよく知らない。でも親切な友人や同僚の助けで、ちょっとは読める感じになってきた。謝謝！
